SOS: Send computer help

Instead of spending the weekend accomplishing anything productive, I worked endlessly on trying to fix my computer. First priority oxygen, second priority internet. Apparently it has contracted a horrible case of gonorrhea or something. I know laptops have a short life span, but after I completely reinstalled its operating system this summer, you think it could have given me another measly year.

I’ve tried every disk clean-up option possible, removed programs, and even tried numerous system restore options, all to no avail.

Not only is my computer moving slower than a stoned turtle, but I have to reboot it about once an hour. This is putting a crimp in my style. On top of that, my computer won’t open Microsoft Money any longer, which is not a good thing. I have no access to any of my bank information and despite backing up the program, uninstalling it and reinstalling it, it still won’t open.

My brain is fried and I’ve made no progress.

I’m off to research a new laptop. I think it is the only reasonable solution, don’t you? Any suggestions?

This is perhaps the strangest blog post I’ve ever written. See, I told you, the computer ate my brain cells. Thankfully I didn’t take up a career in IT.

It must be in the air. I just spent 3 hours at my girlfriends house trying to set up her new laptop to the internet. I couldn't, then, I somehow lost her broadband set-up on her main computer... she now has NO internet. Good thing I don't charge anything. Good Kuck with yours!

So sorry to hear about the computer problems! Sadly, my priorities would be about the same.

Having just bought a new desktop, I have to admit I'm reading your post and thanking the gods I didn't buy a laptop! Sorry about your loss. We'll have a lovely memorial service for your laptop. We'll all post sentiments on your blog ... I knew Lappy when ...

(Verification word: fisjob. I tried to fix my laptop, but it ended up being a fisjob.)

Crazy Mo - You crack me up! It's not an easy job making me laugh tonight. I'm so adding fisjob into my vocab!

BUY A MAC!

We don't have one because our last two laptop purchases have pretty much been emergencies...uh, like yours. We didn't want to shell out the $ for a Mac, but they are getting cheaper, and I want one. My dad & sister have both converted.

Check out Lenovo laptops - they used to be IBM. Lemme know if you see something you like because it's possible I know someone who knows someone...

I did take up a career in IT and I have fewer brain cells than me. Aren't you glad you didn't call tech support and get me on the other end?

Lyndsay, your so my husband (computer genius to the planet me)...I turn into a 3 year old with a broken toy and run crying to him to fix it.

Have you checked with the computer mfg tech people to see if they can help?

I had a desktop that had a lot of problems. Original warranty was expired. Purchased new one after expiration and went thru months of problems. Ended up getting brand new awesome computer from HP.

I've learned a lesson - keep my warranty up to date!

Oh man, I hate computer problems. I'm usually a super patient person, but when my computer throws a fit, I want to toss it out the window within seconds... So, I totally sympathize with your loss & congratulate you on your new, well behaved computer at the same time.

And, Crazy Mo - I absolutely laughed my ass off when I saw your verification word:

fis - Swedish for fart
job - means the same in both languages.

:D

you should get a triple e pc. they are a laptop (sorry) but they are really really small. it's exactly the same as a normal laptop except for the novelty of being tiny!
good luck in your computer search!

Even though I, theoretically, know something about computers, I freaking HATE it when anything goes wrong with my machine. (That's what we professionals call them, you know -- "machines," as in "nice machine" and "what's wrong with your machine?") Becuase a computer is a tool, and I don't want to spend time fixing a tool -- a tool is supposed to build and/or fix other things!

There ought to be some kind of sacrificial ceremony to conduct to keep our friend the computer in a happy state. Maybe handwriting pages of notes and then ripping them up while the computer looks on? Yeah. I didn't get enough sleep.

Not sure if you remember my post about the virus that ate my computer, but I, too, am having computer issues. It's a great way to say hello to the first monday of the new year, huh? I say get a new computer. One without a virus ;-)

Oh that's no fun! I hope you find something you like.

Beth - I'd love a MAC, just not sure I'm gonna shell out the $. Plus, that means learning a new operating systems and I'm not sure I am that ambitious.

Cate - They had some of those on Consumer Reports with good ratings. Just how good of a deal can you get me? LOL!

Jeanne - Oh, this computer is a TOOL alright, just not the kind you are talking about.

Goddess - I am going to do that from Day one with the new computer - initate it with scare tactics.

I have a Lenova Think Pad from work. It takes AGES to boot up but other than that it's been a good machine.
