Apparently not my strong suit

Kate has the tendency to become slightly obsessed with some of the strangest things. When we are being sweet and endearing, we refer to her as our little OCD-baby. Lately her fixation has been the sun and the moon. She knows when the moon is full and where to locate it in the sky. Every morning we have to assess the sky and locate either the sun or the moon. One morning she found the sun rising on the right and the moon still in the sky on the left. She was thoroughly confused to locate both and sincerely questioned the legitimacy of the earth-science lessons I had been giving her in the car.

One morning this week, I was getting the typical narrative from the back seat, which went something like this: its dark mom. Mom, mom, its dark. It’s dark out mom. I can see the moon, the moon, look mom the moon. Is it a full moon? The sun isn’t out because it’s dark and because I can see the moon. Do you see the moon mom? Sing me a song please. If you’ve never heard Kate speak, those 8 sentences would contain approximately three breaths and would leave an innocent bystander wondering if she was aware of the fact that periods, commas, and question marks require a pause or change in intonation.

KATE: Mom, please, sing me a song.
ME: Umm, star light, star bright, first star I see to…
KATE: No, mom, not THAT song.
ME: Okay, what song.
KATE: The sun comes up song.
ME: We don’t have a sun comes up song.
KATE: Yes we do! Just sing the sun comes up song.
ME: Uh, uh, the sun comes up. The sun comes up. When the sun comes up, the moon goes down. Waiting for the sun to come up …
KATE: Ugh. No, not that sun comes up song mom.
ME: Sorry Kate, then I’ve got nothing.

How do you fail at making up the words to a made up song?

My son does this to me all the time!!!!! It is probably some random thing you said one time and they have minds like a steel-trap while yours is rusty and hanging off the hinges (like mine) and can't recall what you ate last night let alone the words to the "Sun Comes Up" song that you probably sang once when she was 2!

Whew! How was that for a run on sentence!

I love the brutal honesty of kids. Sometimes.
They make for cute stories, don't they?

I lost all my music privledges by singing along with one of Laura's songs in the car. "Mommy, please stop singing, I don't like the way you sing".

Ouch.

And Laura and Kate sound a lot alike. It's just exhausting isn't it? And is it just me, or do you feel like you should have paid more attention in school simply to answer your child's questions?

@Claire--Chickie started demanding, "STOP SINGING, MOMMY!" I taught her to be more polite about it. "Please stop singing." Then I got tired of it. Gosh darn it, I like to sing in the car! So I told her, "We have a new rule. Mommy can sing when she wants to."

I love being able to make the rules.

I think all children in that age range have a way of making their parents feel stupid! Then they get over it and then they do it again when they become teenagers..or maybe at 9 these days. That was a funny story!

kids are great for making you feel stupid aren't they? Don't worry.. it doesn't get any better as she grows older

That is funny! And, yes Kate would say all of that in about 5 seconds! LOL!
Jenna has been asking for the mouse song, and I have NO IDEA what she is talking about. I've tried Hickory Dickory Dock and anything I can think of. I need to ask daycare if they sing a mouse song!

This is why I'm just the step-mom.

It's not every day I get to add to my "Reasons I Might Make a Good Mama" list (usually it's the OTHER list). But I'm awesome at making up songs. Just ask my husband. Or my cats. Or the people in cars near mine. You should hear my zoo song. Grammy-nominated, that one.

That post made me laugh out loud at work. Kate sounds like such a little firecracker! I hope my future kid is half as hilarious as she is.

Oh, I wanted to add--Chickie is really OCD right now too; she'll get very fixated on certain routines and sometimes has to tell me, "Jesus is right here with me" several times before I can leave her room for her to go to sleep. I was asking a preschool teacher friend about it and she said it's totally normal. So there may be a chance that she'll end up no more screwed up than the rest of us.

What about Annie? "The sun will come up....tomorrow....bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow....there'll be sun...."

When I can't sing, You Tube is my friend.

Looking at these comments, I know that I am not alone in having an OCD 3 year old, who hates to hear me sing! Hallelujah!

ROFL - I truly enjoy your blog and the comments.

how about "Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun won't you please shine down on me?"

Or, "the sun'll come out, tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there'll be sun"

I'd just tell her to sing it for you first!? lol
