Class, listen up, procrastination will NOT be tolerated!

I’m currently in the middle of a major mindset change. In just four short weeks, I get to transition from student to part-time professor. Hard to believe, right? Actually, I should rephrase that. I am going from student to professor AND student, depending on just how ambitious I feel like I can be when January rolls around. You know, because this last semester didn’t quite push me over the edge, driving all Thelma and Louise style into the abyss.

This will be my second semester of teaching hotel management to a group of junior and senior students at our local University. One might wonder how a Human Resources Director teaches hotel management, am I right? I’m hoping you are asking yourself that instead of just thinking, lovely, they let anyone teach these days, don’t they?

See, in my former life (read: the job I held for seven years prior to the one I have now), I was in hotel management. On the premise that a secret informant has told me that my prior boss (Hi Glen!) reads this blog, I all of a sudden don’t have too much to say about my prior job. Although Glen has a fantabulous sense of humor, I am not sure just how tolerant that humor would be when it comes to my prior employment. Since I like the guy and really need to keep him on my reference list, I will refrain from going there. Dang it.

On that note, I thoroughly enjoy teaching the industry to others. In fact, I like it, I like it A LOT (said in my best Lloyd – Dumb and Dumber voice).

Since I know that quite a few college students read this blog, I thought they might get a kick out anticipating some of the stories to come. From the professors side of view that is.

So, instead of basking in this lovely break from school, I get to prepare for a different aspect of school. However, being on THIS side of the classroom gives me a paycheck. Oh and since I am the professor, I get to make the rules. Plus, my students like me, what can I say? I guess I am young enough that I can still fool them into thinking I am cool, but old enough to actually teach them something.

You get to make the rules. Wow, that kind of power could be intoxicating!

Rule number 1 in Professor C. Beth's class would be that everyone brings me chocolate on Mondays.

I really do wonder why no one has offered me tenure.

Well that sounds like a lot of fun! It would be cool to be a professor. Although, it sounds like it is probably a lot of work too! When are you going to find time to keep blogging? Maybe you can somehow incorporate your blog into one of the lessons. Yeah, that's it!

Beth - What's wrong with that rule? Should I remove that from my list? Now you've gotten me all confused!

Janah - It is fun actually! It won't be nearly as much work this time around (since I have taught the same class one before). Fear not the blog being neglected! It takes me all of 15 minutes to write my posts, so I can ALWAYS squeeze that in :)

Eizzy: Well, if it were secret, I wouldn't be able to tell you, right? There really isn't anything all that exciting to share - promise!

Probably wise to censor yourself re: previous employers. Unfortunately, I never was very smat. My own rule is, if it's fundamentally true, and it's funny, it's fodder for the blog.

Jeanne - Thankfully (woefully??) my life provides enough blog fodder in many different areas, LOL!

You've already addressed my concern that your blogging would suffer (priorities!) so as long as that's not the case, I fully support your new endeavors!

It actually sounds really exciting to be on the cusp of something new. I've been doing exactly what I'm doing professionally for almost 8 years. It's getting old.

I am excited for you! I hope you will enjoy it. Now, if only you could get you students to call you "Queen of the Universe" before each question they ask you, that'd be perfect!

Lyndsay ~

I hope this posts because every time I try to post it does not work - I guess I am not technological enough to respond to your blog - he he. So I am just going to reply anonymous hoping something posts finally!

Coming from a former employee of yours (this is Steph) I can totally vouch for your capabilities in teaching hotel management. You were my favorite.... ok ok it is pretty much a tie between you and Tiff:) Your students are very lucky.

I am trying to figure out how you always seem to get everything done though, sheesh! And with a child. My husband is my child and I cannot fathom working FT, being a student, teaching, and taking care of a "real" child without going completely nutso.

Kudos to my fav. former boss for everything you seem to accomplish.

Steph - Yea! So nice to hear from you! You are too nice in your comments :)

I'm glad you figured out how to post a comment ... and I'm glad to see you are reading my blog.

Let me know next time you are in the area and I'd love to catch-up for lunch, or something.

I do think I need a personal assistant to manage my schedule if you are interested, LOL. And I'm also glad I'm not the only one guilty of referring to my husband as "my other kid ..."

I can understand worrying/wondering about blogging about jobs, former jobs, etc. I keep the same rule though--if it's relatively true, and funny, then it's ok. Maybe that was someone else's rule in the comments, but I have the same rule, whoever said that! Anyway, sounds like fun!
